Web portal for the Association for the Heritage of the Piedmont Vineyard Landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato

The Piedmont landscape as a shared heritage

Langhe-Roero and Monferrato: a story of balance between people and nature, recognized by UNESCO in 2014.

The project

This portal was created to connect the UNESCO Site, made up of six components, from the Langhe of Barolo to the hills of Barbaresco, and on to Nizza Monferrato, Canelli, the Monferrato of the Infernot, and the Castle of Grinzane Cavour, with the people who live it and study it every day. A living landscape, where nature, culture, and human work have been intertwined for centuries.

Online, it becomes two sites in one:

  • What the UNESCO Site is and its components: a clear editorial section that explains its values, timeline, component map, and ongoing projects.
  • Outreach & Education: the “school and research channel” with learning paths and initiatives for citizens, scholars, and visitors, to spread awareness and care for the landscape.
At Kumbe, we took care of the entire digital journey: from the initial idea to the site going live.

What we did

  • Technology portal development: we built a fast, scalable platform that supports institutional content, education, and public participation.
  • UX architecture & tone of voice: a content map with journeys to understand (what the Site is), explore (components and projects), and take part (education, events, voting). Tone of voice: clear, welcoming, authoritative, never academic, never bland.
  • Design & UI: a bright, accessible interface with strong hierarchies, readable typography, and smart cards and filters for projects, events, and components.
  • CMS open-source: chosen for its enterprise-ready nature with headless/API-first architecture, multi-channel management, flexible content models, and an integrated DAM. An editor-friendly foundation that lets the portal grow without rebuilds.
  • SEO from day one: struttura semantica, URL puliti, metadata e schema dove serve. Il portale nasce “SEO-first”, non ci si pensa dopo.
Pimcore

Direct, intuitive website management

The UNESCO Vineyard Landscapes website was built with the Pimcore CMS. A major added value of this project is that it enables the client to manage update content fully independently and in real time.

A single integrated management tool, easy for the whole team to use.
Why Pimcore:
  • Open-source & modular: no proprietary lock-ins, maximum extensibility.
  • API-driven: content ready for web, apps, kiosks, newsletters.
  • DXP mindset: content, data, and assets in the same ecosystem, with straightforward editorial governance.

Technological integrations

The ones that make the difference

  • Custom event database import: connectors to import external calendars and normalize them in the CMS. Events become clean, filterable pages, referenced to the UNESCO components.
  • Organized, usable archive: taxonomies, tags, and cross-linked relationships (projects ↔ components ↔ partners ↔ media). The result? A living archive you navigate like a story, not like a folder.
  • Real-time project voting with scores: a dedicated module with instant vote-count updates and an embedded widget on the “Projects” pages. Each initiative can be voted on by users; the score updates in real time and makes the community’s energy visible in support of the projects.
Participation becomes public data and sparks conversations.

A unique portal to tell and safeguard an extraordinary landscape, and an open, participatory platform that turns visits, research, and education into an active community.
