Web portal for the Heritage Association of the Piedmont Vineyard Landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato.

The Piedmont landscape as a shared heritage

Langhe-Roero and Monferrato: the story of the balance between people and nature, recognised by UNESCO in 2014.

The project

This portal was created to connect the six components of the UNESCO site, from the Langhe of Barolo to the hills of Barbaresco, and on to Nizza Monferrato, Canelli, the Monferrato of Infernot, and Grinzane Cavour Castle, with the people who live and study here every day.

A living landscape, where nature, culture, and human activity have been intertwined for centuries.

  • About the UNESCO site and its components: a clear editorial section that explains its values, timeline, a map of the components, and ongoing projects.
  • Outreach & Education: the “school and research channel” with learning paths and initiatives for citizens, scholars and visitors, to promote and care for the landscape.
At Kumbe, we took care of the entire digital journey: from the initial idea to the site going live.

What we did

  • Technical development of the portal: we built a fast, scalable platform that supports institutional content, education, and public participation.
  • UX architecture & tone of voice: a content map with journeys to understand (what the Site is), explore (components and projects), and take part (education, events, voting). Tone of voice: clear, welcoming, authoritative, never academic, never bland.
  • Design & UI: a bright, accessible interface with strong hierarchies, readable typography, and smart cards and filters for projects, events, and components.
  • Open-source CMS: chosen because it is enterprise-ready, with headless/API-first architecture, multi-channel management, flexible content models, and integrated DAM. An editor-friendly base that allows the portal to grow without rebuilds.
  • SEO from day one: semantic structure, clean URLs, metadata and schemas where needed. The portal is designed as “SEO-first”, not as an afterthought.
Pimcore

Direct, intuitive website management

The UNESCO Vineyard Landscapes website was built with the Pimcore CMS. A major added value of this project is the way that it allows the client to manage and update content in real time and completely independently.

A single integrated management tool, easy for the whole team to use.
Why Pimcore:
  • Open-source & modular: no proprietary lock-ins, maximum extensibility.
  • API-driven: content ready for web, apps, kiosks, newsletters.
  • DXP mindset: content, data, and assets in the same ecosystem, with straightforward editorial governance.

Technological integrations

The ones that make the difference

  • Custom event database import: connectors to import external calendars and standardise them in the CMS.
  • An organised, usable archive: taxonomies, tags, and cross-linked relationships (projects ↔ components ↔ partners ↔ media).
  • Real-time project voting with scores: a dedicated module with live vote-counting updates and an embedded widget on the “Projects” pages. Each initiative can be voted on by users; the counts update in real time and make the community’s energy visible in support of the projects.

A unique portal to safeguard and to tell the story of an extraordinary landscape, and an open, participatory platform that turns visits, research, and education into an active community.
